Overview
About this event
On September 23, 2026, the AI·SW HVDC Integrated Power System Innovation Research Center hosted an invited seminar by Soohyun Nam of KEPCO on the operation and maintenance of underground transmission facilities. The seminar introduced the basic structures and functions of underground cables and joints and highlighted the importance of field inspection and condition assessment for reliable power-system operation. The discussion also emphasized that practical power-grid applications require consideration of long-term operational reliability, maintainability, and field applicability in addition to the technical performance of individual components. Participants gained a better understanding of field-oriented technical needs and discussed potential applications of cable diagnostics and data-driven condition assessment in research and education. The seminar is expected to support future research on monitoring underground and submarine cables used in large-scale HVDC networks, identifying potential failures at an early stage, and improving the overall reliability and stability of HVDC systems.
