Publication of Research by the Lead Institution in an International Journal

The C2 Grid Hub research team investigated the mechanisms of AC–DC power imbalances and DC-link voltage excursions in GFM converters caused by AC faults in future MTDC-interconnected power systems. The team developed a mitigation strategy considering power-flow direction and current-limiting conditions, and the study was accepted for publication in an international journal.

Dr. Minsung Ko of The University of Texas at Austin introduced the rapid load growth, variability, and power-system stability issues that may arise from the grid integration of large-scale AI data centers. He discussed detailed load modeling, flexible operating strategies, and future research needs, as well as potential applications of AI in power-system research.

RTDS-Based HIL and Controller Interface Training

On July 6-7 and 13-15, researchers participated in training at Semyung University on RTDS/RSCAD-based power-system modeling and real-time simulation. The real-time simulation and controller interface techniques acquired through the program will support future research on HVDC modeling, controller validation, and HIL testing.

2026 Power School Hosted by the KEPCO Management Research Institute

From July 1 to 3, researchers attended the Power School hosted by the KEPCO Management Research Institute, which covered a broad range of topics spanning power systems, energy, policy, and economics. A technical visit to the Seo-Jeju HVDC converter station provided an opportunity to observe the role of HVDC in Jeju’s power system.

Development of the HVDC Engineering Tool

The Research Center developed a web-based HVDC design and verification tool that comprehensively evaluates system constraints, P-Q operating regions, DC line losses, and converter design results based on key MMC-HVDC design parameters. The tool can also generate PSCAD and PSS/E simulation models and design documentation.

The Converter and Cable research teams of C2-GRID presented their key research achievements in the design and stability of GFM-HVDC and MTDC systems, large-scale EMT modeling, cable diagnostics, and power transmission capacity enhancement. Prior to the presentations, Sunghan Kim demonstrated the MMC HVDC Design Tool developed in-house by the research team, highlighting the potential for practical application of its research outcomes.

The C2 GRID HUB Research Center published an independently developed special report titled Changes in the Power Grid Observed at PES GM 2026, analyzing the event’s major technical themes and on-site discussions.
