Development of the HVDC Engineering Tool
The Research Center developed a web-based HVDC design and verification tool that comprehensively evaluates system constraints, P-Q operating regions, DC line losses, and converter design results based on key MMC-HVDC design parameters. The tool can also generate PSCAD and PSS/E simulation models and design documentation.

Junchul Lee participated in PESGM 2026 in Montreal, Canada, where he shared research achievements related to the operating experience of Korea’s commercial BTB MMC-HVDC system and the design, control, and grid-support technologies of a large-scale GFM-HVDC system for the West Coast Energy Highway.

Chanho Ji, a researcher at the C2 GRID HUB Research Center, presented a poster titled “Ambient PMU-Based Low-Frequency Oscillation Mode Estimation Using SSI-COV and TDA Clustering.” His paper was selected as an outstanding paper, earning him a Best Paper Award.

Cigre Paris Session 2026
Researchers from the C2 Grid Hub participated in the CIGRE Paris Session 2026, held in Paris, France, from August 23 to 28, 2026. They presented their research on future power system operation and GFM-HVDC technologies during the C2 and B4 sessions and the joint B4-C4 workshop.

C2-GRID hosted an industry expert workshop to share research achievements in GFM-HVDC and MTDC systems, industrial cables, and the Energy-AI nexus, while discussing future directions for technical collaboration and workforce development with industry experts and participating research teams.

The C2 Grid Hub research team investigated the mechanisms of AC–DC power imbalances and DC-link voltage excursions in GFM converters caused by AC faults in future MTDC-interconnected power systems. The team developed a mitigation strategy considering power-flow direction and current-limiting conditions, and the study was accepted for publication in an international journal.

Dr. Minsung Ko of The University of Texas at Austin introduced the rapid load growth, variability, and power-system stability issues that may arise from the grid integration of large-scale AI data centers. He discussed detailed load modeling, flexible operating strategies, and future research needs, as well as potential applications of AI in power-system research.

At the KIEE Summer Conference workshop, the C2 GRID HUB Research Center presented its vision and workforce development plan, along with an AI agent–based HVDC system analysis tool. Researchers presented posters, and Chanho Ji received a Best Paper Award for his study.

On July 6-7 and 13-15, researchers participated in training at Semyung University on RTDS/RSCAD-based power-system modeling and real-time simulation. The real-time simulation and controller interface techniques acquired through the program will support future research on HVDC modeling, controller validation, and HIL testing.

From July 1 to 3, researchers attended the Power School hosted by the KEPCO Management Research Institute, which covered a broad range of topics spanning power systems, energy, policy, and economics. A technical visit to the Seo-Jeju HVDC converter station provided an opportunity to observe the role of HVDC in Jeju’s power system.

The Converter and Cable research teams of C2-GRID presented their key research achievements in the design and stability of GFM-HVDC and MTDC systems, large-scale EMT modeling, cable diagnostics, and power transmission capacity enhancement. Prior to the presentations, Sunghan Kim demonstrated the MMC HVDC Design Tool developed in-house by the research team, highlighting the potential for practical application of its research outcomes.

The C2 GRID HUB Research Center published an independently developed special report titled Changes in the Power Grid Observed at PES GM 2026, analyzing the event’s major technical themes and on-site discussions. The report examines how large-scale data centers and power-electronics-based facilities are reshaping power systems and summarizes the latest developments spanning grid-support technologies using GFM converters, E-STATCOMs, and HVDC systems; PMU-, AI-, and wide-area-EMT-based analysis; and power-system protection and restoration.
