Preparation of a Report on Cable and Power Equipment Diagnostic Technologies and R&D Needs
A technical review report was prepared based on domestic and international research, examining diagnostic technologies and field applications for cables and power equipment. The report identifies technical limitations and R&D needs and outlines future directions for AI- and software-based diagnostics.
Overview
About this event
On October 12, 2026, the Center’s cable research team prepared a 40-page technical review report titled “Cable and Power Equipment Diagnostic Technologies and R&D Needs.” Drawing on recent domestic and international academic publications, the report reviews research developments and field application examples to identify technical limitations and priorities for further research.
The cable diagnostics review covers signal propagation and partial discharge diagnosis in long cables, degradation assessment of HVDC cables, and reflection-based fault location. It examines research approaches and application examples, outlining developments and remaining challenges in assessing cable condition and detecting and locating defects.
The report also reviews distributed sensing for field monitoring, supraharmonic measurements, and source identification. These topics provide an overview of measurement- and data-based approaches to cable and power equipment diagnostics, highlighting research needs related to practical application and further technological development.
The findings are brought together to outline future directions for AI- and software-based diagnostic technologies. Particular attention is given to validating measurement-data-based analysis methods and supporting their application in the field. The report provides a foundation for subsequent diagnostics and monitoring research and for identifying research topics connected to industrial needs.
