Overview

About this event

On October 27, 2026, the Center hosted an industry expert seminar at Yonsei University featuring Heejin Kim, CEO of UPTEC. The seminar introduced the fundamentals of HVDC systems and voltage-source converters, tracing the analytical process from mathematical circuit modeling to controller design.

Using a basic circuit consisting of a voltage source, switching devices, and an inductor, the presentation explained how converter operation can be understood through electrical relationships. Particular attention was given to controlling current by adjusting the voltage across the inductor. The session then outlined how circuit equations can be expressed as differential equations and represented through transfer functions and block diagrams, connecting physical circuit structures with control system models.

The seminar also emphasized the importance of considering converter operating conditions and the surrounding grid when assessing performance. Participants explored an analytical perspective that considers both individual equipment control and overall power system stability.

The seminar also compared AC and DC transmission configurations and power transfer arrangements incorporating solid-state transformers (SSTs), discussing losses, modularity, and maintenance considerations. UPTEC’s application areas—including power system simulation, EMT modeling automation, HILS and PHILS interfaces, and HVDC engineering tools—provided further industrial context. The session helped participants connect voltage-source converter fundamentals with practical modeling and analysis tasks.
