PESGM 2026
Researchers attended PESGM 2026, held in Montreal, Canada, from July 19 to 23, and shared their research findings on HVDC system dynamics, modeling, and control with the international research community.

From July 19 to 23, Professor Kyeon Hur participated in the “Dynamic Performance and Modeling of HVDC Systems and Power Electronics for Transmission Systems” session at PESGM 2026 in Montreal, Canada, where he presented recent developments in Korea’s expanding HVDC landscape and key research achievements of the Center. He discussed Korea’s transition from individual HVDC links, including the Jeju–mainland interconnections, toward a national HVDC backbone incorporating the West Coast Energy Highway. He also introduced large-scale EMT modeling and simulation studies aimed at addressing the expansion of renewable generation, semiconductor clusters, and AI data centers. In addition, he presented an analytical method for determining the HVRT operating boundary of MMC-HVDC systems by considering their P-Q operating region and modulation limits. He also demonstrated an in-house web-based HVDC design and verification tool that supports topology selection, parameter design, performance assessment, PSCAD-based EMT verification, and automated report generation. Researchers from the Center also delivered oral and poster presentations. Junchul Lee gave an oral presentation titled “From ±120 kV BTB HVDC Experience to the Design of a ±525 kV 2 GW GFM HVDC System for Korea’s West-Coast Energy Highway.” Based on the design and commissioning experience gained from Korea’s first ±120 kV, 200 MW Yangju BTB MMC-HVDC system, the study proposed design strategies and grid-stabilization technologies for a ±525 kV, 2 GW bipolar GFM-HVDC system intended for the West Coast Energy Highway. Jihoon Lee presented a poster titled “Unified Energy-Forming Framework for MMCs: Seamless GFL/GFM Transition via Internal Energy,” while Sungjun Kim presented “Impedance-based Root Cause Analysis and Grid-Side Damping of a Converter Driven Low-Frequency Oscillation in a High-IBR Grid.” The event provided an opportunity to share the Center’s research achievements in large-scale GFM-HVDC system design and the stable operation of hybrid AC/DC power systems with the international research community.

The Research Center developed a web-based HVDC design and verification tool that comprehensively evaluates system constraints, P-Q operating regions, DC line losses, and converter design results based on key MMC-HVDC design parameters. The tool can also generate PSCAD and PSS/E simulation models and design documentation.

The C2 GRID HUB Research Center published an independently developed special report titled Changes in the Power Grid Observed at PES GM 2026, analyzing the event’s major technical themes and on-site discussions. The report examines how large-scale data centers and power-electronics-based facilities are reshaping power systems and summarizes the latest developments spanning grid-support technologies using GFM converters, E-STATCOMs, and HVDC systems; PMU-, AI-, and wide-area-EMT-based analysis; and power-system protection and restoration.
